Our annual PreK- Kindergarten conference will bring science and systems together, ​applying the science of reading in the context of age-appropriate classrooms. The day will include:

  • a general session addressing equity and early learning, building on data from across the Commonwealth.
  • a breakout session for Kindergarten teachers and leaders emphasizing how the science of reading shapes age-appropriate instruction.
  • a breakout session for PreK teachers and leaders emphasizing the science of young children informs early literacy instruction.
  • a panel of practitioners from Virginia school divisions who will share insights and experiences regarding early literacy.


Our Keynote Speakers

Anita McGinty

Anita McGinty is Research Associate Professor at UVA with a primary affiliation in PALS. Her research explores the importance of quality environments for children’s language and literacy development and examines how research-based programs translate within applied practice, particularly in programs serving low-income children​.

Tisha Hayes

Tisha Hayes has taught students with reading disabilities in the primary through middle grades as a special educator and reading specialist. Now an associate professor at the University of Virginia, she teaches courses on the diagnosis of and intervention for reading difficulties as well as English/Language Arts methods for elementary educators.

Amanda Williford

Amanda Williford is Associate Professor at UVA-CASTL who leads the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). She is an expert in the classroom environments that promote children’s literacy and self-regulation skills.
